What the client needed.

My client Royal Publishing needed to produce a custom t-shirt for the end-client Highland Reign, a Celtic rock band. The band had a basic idea of what they wanted. On the back, a symbol of a Saltire fist grasping barbed wire with a splash of Clan MacFarlane tartan and the title of their latest album. On the front, their band name, a caption, and a “splash” of tartan. It was determined that the art would be too complicated for screen printing, so I was given range to design a multicolor graphic to be printed via direct-to-garment.

What I did.

I drew out my initial concept, then transferred that to a digital painting. From there I had the idea of playing off the album title by depicting the hand bleeding tartan as a result of injury from the barbed wire. Keeping the overall design bold and grungy, I chose basic strong font with a grunge mask. I then repeated the same theme on for the front design except with the end-clients’ request of a “splash of tartan”. Both the client and the end-client were very happy.
